Who is Caleb?

Caleb Smith

It all begins with an idea. Let me turn your ideas into reality. I am skilled and experienced in all types of home building and renovation. Other hats I’ve worn at various times in my life include: pilot, farm manager, permaculture designer, back-packer, forestry worker, photographer, mountain-biker, mushroom business owner, volunteer fire fighter, bush-walker. These days I enjoy good coffee, time with friends and family, cold swims, BJJ, and Lucas-milling.

“Working with Caleb has been like a long awaited rain after a long dry spell. While lots of professionals in the building industry met us with their ‘can’t do’ approaches, Caleb has received all of our ideas with an open mind and curiosity. Not once did he see our proposals (and granted, some were outside the box) as impossible. Rather the opposite. He thought about them and came back with a plan. He executed this plan to perfection and beyond. I am talking milling up our own timber, turning it into a mezzanine, treating it the Japanese way, using traditional joineries. You name it. it’s been such a joy seeing our project take shape under his hands. He’s been a dedicated craftsman who enjoys working with timber and understands the art of working with it. This down to earth guy has always been very strait forward and honest to deal with, has left a perfect finish on everything he touches, without taking oodles of time and just gets it. It’s been the perfect match for us. We thank him deeply and can’t wait to start on the next projects”.

“Caleb has really taken care of us with our first project (building a studio into the shed), and we are excited to work with him on the rest (house, greenhouse, sauna…). We are always looking for ways to do (i) things cheaper than the run-of-the-mill, (ii) but with a better outcome, and (iii) an emphasis on respecting the materials and value-adding craftsmanship. Many folks are just not interested in that kind of approach, maybe because it is risky (the chance of failure and disappointment is high). He was really the only one who not only got what we were trying to do, but could come back with suggestions to improve it. He’s super hard-working, diligent, creative, and really positive. He always treated us fairly and honestly, and the result exceeded our expectations every time. He connected us with a good set of other contractors when we needed them, and at times virtually project-managed the whole effort. On the days I could help out as his second pair of hands, I learned a lot. We can’t thank him enough, and can’t recommend him highly enough. We only wish that there were more people in the trade like him.”
